About

What We Do

Welcome to the heart of our mission, where through our services, we hope to positively impact the lives of moms and their families as they navigate the journey of childbirth.

Our programmes are designed to create comfort, care, and empowering experiences for those who need it most.

From the invaluable support of our doula/birth companions to the transformative work in nurturing young minds, through The Prince and Princess Project, each part of what we do is a crucial step to building stronger, healthier, and more vibrant communities.

Services We Offer

Doula/Birth Companion

Witnessing and being a part of a birth is a unique privilege and an incredible honour. Our doula/birth companions, affectionately known as the “Ladies in Pink,” assist and support moms during labour and delivery.

They provide comfort and encouragement, whether through a reassuring touch, fetching water, or holding a hand. Other times, our Ladies maintain a healing space for families if their baby doesn’t make it into this world.

We firmly believe that no one should face labour alone, that is why our dedicated Pink Ladies are always there to make sure every woman has someone with them for support.

The Prince and Princess Project

This programme focuses on nurturing young minds, specifically Grade 8 students, through an annual 4-week programme for both boys and girls.

Returning to the same schools annually allows us to offer continuous support as these students progress to matriculation.

Our goal is to empower every student with self-awareness, self-love, and a strong sense of their own value.

Postnatal Support

Being a new mom can be a challenging experience, which is why our compassionate doulas and birth companions provide essential assistance after the baby’s arrival.

The team offers valuable advice, emotional support, and practical help, making the transition into motherhood as smooth as possible.

Nursery Assistance

Our hard-working team of volunteers provides vital support in the Pre-discharge Nursery at Mowbray Maternity Hospital. Here, we care for up to 5 babies at a time.

While these babies are usually in good health, some may need help with certain social issues, before being discharged. Additionally, we may care for babies who are available for adoption, or whose mothers have been transferred to Groote Schuur Hospital due to complicated deliveries.

Mowbray Maternity Hospital embraces a mother-baby-friendly ethos, ensuring all babies are cared for on a 3-hour feeding schedule. Our volunteers work alongside the nursing staff, giving love, comfort, stimulation, massage, and soothing music. They also assist with practical tasks such as feeding and diaper changes, ensuring that these babies receive the best possible care during their stay.

Bereavement Doula

In the face of the emotional pain tied to pregnancy loss or stillbirth, our doulas/birth companions create a supportive environment for mothers and their families.

They offer comfort, empathy, and guidance during this difficult journey, assisting moms in coping with their loss, and navigating the grieving process. For those who wish, we help create keepsakes like footprints and photographs, providing tangible memories to aid in the healing process.

We also recommend postpartum support, including counselling and connections to valuable resources, to help families through this time.

Kangaroo Mother Care

The Kangaroo Mother Care Ward is a haven for mommies with babies born prematurely – weighing less than 1.75kg.

Here, mothers engage in round-the-clock skin-to-skin contact with their little ones, while exclusively breastfeeding. Their stay can range from a few days to several months.

During this period, The Zoe Project’s volunteers do activities like crafts, photo shoots, educational talks, and visits to the hospital garden. This has an immediate, and remarkable effect, leaving a lasting impact on both the mother and the baby.

Antenatal Classes

The journey of giving birth and becoming a new mom can seem scary, that is why our antenatal classes are carefully designed to support expectant mothers. Over the course of 10 weeks, essential topics are covered such as labour stages, breastfeeding, and nutrition.

At the end of the course, there is a joyful baby shower celebration, where moms are honoured with a gift and a certificate. It’s incredible to witness the growth in these women, as they embrace their newfound confidence and purpose of motherhood.

Counselling Services

Living in one of the Western Cape’s most gang-infested and poverty-stricken areas, places tremendous strain on pregnant mothers and their unborn babies. And often, The Zoe Centres stand as beacons of support and hope in communities.

Our trained counsellors tackle a wide range of social issues, including finding safe homes for mothers and children, walking a journey with a rape survivor, and providing education on sensitive topics such as abortion, adoption, and teenage pregnancies.

We work hand in hand with the Department of Social Services and other staff, empowering women to make positive choices for themselves and their families.

The Prison Programme

Incarcerated mothers give birth at Retreat MOU, or Mowbray Maternity Hospital when they have complications during their pregnancy. The Zoe Team works in Pollsmoor Prison, giving antenatal classes, while also extending their services to babies and moms for post-natal care.

This programme focuses on education, whether it’s about nutrition, nurturing the mother-baby bond, or simple acts of love. We’re committed to helping these mothers provide the best start in life for their children, even in tough circumstances.

Zoe Zimbabwe

COVID-19 placed further burdens on pregnant mothers from other countries. Many found themselves in dire situations, unable to access food parcels due to lack of identification. As a Zimbabwean, my heart ached for these women in South Africa and my homeland, Zimbabwe. This led to the birth of “Zoe Zim.”

Four times a year, essential items such as cotton nappies, reusable sanitary pads, and Vaseline are sent by truck to Zimbabwe. Dedicated women then distribute these items, and provide valuable education on labour and birth to those who need it.

Educational and Motivational Talks

Many people have misconceptions or lack proper information on topics such as birthing in government clinics, old wives’ tales, pregnancy, and contraceptives. That is why we share accurate information, through educational and motivational talks at MOUs (Midwifery Obstetric Units).

We believe knowledge is a powerful tool, and when combined with encouraging mentorship, it has a profound and lasting effect.

Food Support

Nutritious meals are offered to moms at the MOUs, who need to stay longer than planned, or require food after labour.

Mothers giving birth at the maternity units usually have brief stays, but labour is an extremely demanding experience, and nourishment is essential. This project operates on the principle of supply and demand, and relies on your assistance to make it possible.

Upliftment of the MOU Environment

Wherever there is a need for improvement within the MOU, we try to assist where we can. This includes providing new curtains, painting, installing fans, and installing water purifiers. These improvements are not just cosmetic; they create a comfortable and welcoming space for mommy and baby.
